Are My Tenants Required to Wear a Face Mask?

On July 22, 2020 Governor Walz mandated that masks must be worn at all times while in indoor businesses and indoor public settings. This effects all Minnesotans especially those who own or manage multi-unit dwellings. In a multi-unit dwelling, apartment building or other multi-unit complex masks now must be worn in any common area including hallways and lobbies.

The mandate is subject to a few exceptions like workout facilities while working out or while swimming. Tenants are not required to wear a mask in their units, however, they are required to wear a mask on their way to and from their unit.

If an owner or manager chooses not to enforce the mask requirement, they may subject themselves to a misdemeanor and upon conviction could owe a fine of up to $1000 or 90 days in jail. You can view a full copy of Executive Order 20-81 HERE.
